For a long time, I’ve been looking for a vegan restaurant in Utrecht. Even if most of the restaurants offer a solid choice of vegetarian meals, veganism is not so prominent. After all, the Dutchies like their cheese and I can see why!
So when I passed Anna’s Lunchroom, I was quite surprised that they were promoting vegan, sugar-free, gluten-free and dairy-free cakes. Now, if you’re looking for a to the core vegan place, then this might not be the right place as they still serve dishes with meat. The only thing that is clearly vegan on their menu are the desserts, which were btw also the best dish.
As a main, I tried their Yin Yang Tofu Burger. The burger tasted really good, and I was really impressed that even the pickled gherkins were house-made. They make an effort to give their food an innovative touch since the bottom of my bread looked as usual but the top bun was black. It didn’t taste different but gave the dish a very interesting appearance. However, I have to say that I was a bit surprised by the taste of the burger. Not because it was bad, but because it tasted more like scrambled tofu. My friend went for the vegetarian spinach raviolis, which were good but were missing a pep of salt.
Now as already mentioned, the best part was the cake. We ordered blueberry/ lavender cake, baked with coconut flour. The cake was pure eye-candy and tasted amazing… and completely guilt-free!
In general, this place supports a healthy and light kitchen, and really makes an effort to work with their home-made products. That might also explain why we thought that the ravioli sauce tasted a bit unsavoury because we are so used to the dominant flavours and sodium-rich products. If you’re into something slightly alternative, yet neither too far away from the usual, you should have your next lunch at Anna’s Lunchroom.
